I’m kicking off the New Year with the launch of an exciting new project: The Sound Collective.
Music is a universal language. It is the golden thread that binds us together through its powerful means to connect, heal and inspire. At The Sound Collective, we celebrate this power by curating unique moments for us to come together in rhythm and harmony, to create something bigger than ourselves – as we raise our voices and create noises, not for us just to hear; but to feel, share and live. We believe that making music in community and collaboration is a fundamental human need, and our mission is to build a safe space for this in a day and age when this is so often hard to find, yet needed the most.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, JUST TURN UP AND SING?
The Sound Collective’s Turn Up and Sing series provides an interactive & immersive experience where we sing together with others for an evening, to experience the celebration of song and the connective power of singing in harmony. Our Turn Up and Sing sessions provide the opportunity to build community, make some new friends, release stress, and have fun as we raise our powerfully diverse voices as one.
For each session, we pick a single piece of music to rehearse and sing our hearts out to. In our time together, we will:
- Engage in some fun vocal warmups
- Work through the piece in sections
- Explore the lyrics, mood and emotions of the song
- Shape some key musical moments
- Sing, sing, sing!
THE SONG FOR THE SESSION:
For our first ever Turn Up and Sing session, we’ll be going on a delectable journey through Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory – the world of ‘Pure Imagination’. Yes, that’s right, we’ll be singing ‘Pure Imagination’, written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The original version sung by Gene Wilder in the film remains one of the most iconic cinematic moments of all time, as it was the first time in movie history that we would see a world made of chocolate – “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls… the chocolate room…”. Lifting the curtain to another dimension, ‘Pure Imagination’ captures the excitement, wonder, and the inviting yet somehwat unsettling thought of ‘what if I stayed here forever..?’ This bewitching song has since been covered by choirs and artists across the globe including the Glee Cast, the Muppets, Barbra Streisand, Alfie Boe, Jamie Cullum, Josh Groban and most recently Timothée Chamelet in the 2023 film Wonka.
Characterised by its haunting melody, dreamlike harmonies and colourful chord progression, this whimsical masterpiece makes for a wonderful diving into during our session.
LEARNING THE MUSIC
Sheet music and vocal references will be sent to you in the weeks leading up to the event, and our collective goal is to listen to the song ahead of time so that we come into the session with a rough idea as to how it goes. This way, we can spend our time together really diving into the richness of music-making, rather than trying to learn the key melodies from scratch. We don’t need to know our parts by heart by any means, though the stronger we are in our parts coming in, the more we’ll be able to really dig into the fun stuff!
